Since just have any old muliple angles or views won't make a 3D image for the way TVs and 3D monitors display 3D images. I am also guessing but I am almost certain disparity is meant for 3D visualizations. That way you could hold a host of images for a pano, or perhaps a "matrix" shot where you have a full 360 degree set of images of one subject. The format was probably intended to be the same subject in the same time frame and not just a collection of images. On the second side of this, you have the multiple images concept, so you can have more than one view of the same subject. They are also good for previews on a camera digital display. The idea is to take large 24MP size photos (or in the "large" size range) and make a preview of the same image so a TV doesn't have to have high end processors on board to view it. (Though it technically can have more shapes than that, it is maxed out at a pixel size to match an HD TV display. Each image can have two thumbnail images designed for a 16:9 or 4:3 screen. The spec is meant to make jpg files display better on TVs and computer screens and to allow more than one picture in a single file. I've read the spec from the CIPA site and it is indeed a multi image jpeg format, formally "Multi Picture Format". I realize this is a little late, but it may help others Google'ing this. I think that it's just another way of handling stereoscopic 3D where what's stored in the second image is the differences from the first image. MPF file allows storing multiple images comprising a panorama, or simultaneous views from multiple angles (stereoscopic 3D, etc), and "disparity". Baseline MP file uses Exif extensions, and specifies a file format including MP extensions which enable to store the Primary Image and additional image(s)." "A Baseline MP file consists of a Primary Image and an additional duplicate image that has been formatted for optimal viewing on TVs and other viewing devices. It's CIPA Multi-Picture Format-storing multiple sizes of a photo into a single JPEG file. I had to hunt around for a while to come up with the answer. Someone knows what "MPF baseline" file format, listed on some Sony tech data sheets stands for?
